Kyrie Irving Trade Rumors Discussed by Dan Gilbert, Koby Altman

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and new general manager Koby Altman addressed trade rumblings involving All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving on Wednesday.

The subject of Irving’s trade request was brought up during Altman’s introductory press conference.

Per ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, Gilbert said there “were several scenarios discussed at that time” of the initial meeting that prompted Irving to make his trade request and any potential trade is a “fluid” situation.

Altman didn’t definitively say whether or not he was trading Irving but mentioned the 25-year-old “continues to be a core piece in terms of what we do,” per Nichols

As far as any animosity between Irving and LeBron James, Altman said it is “overblown,” per Tom Withers of the Associated Press.

ESPN’s Chris Haynes reported Irving gave the Cavaliers a list of four preferred destinations that included the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves

Irving has spent his entire NBA career with the Cavaliers since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2011. He has been named to the All-Star team four times and his go-ahead three-pointer against the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals was the biggest shot in franchise history.

The Cavaliers aren’t obligated to move Irving at this point. They are still equipped with a roster capable of getting to the NBA Finals for a fourth straight time next season, and Irving remains under contract for two more seasons with a player option for 2019-20
