The ice-cold relationship between Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook thawed for a moment Tuesday when the Golden State Warriors star congratulated his former teammate on winning the 2016-17 NBA MVP award.
Durant offered his congratulations to Westbrook in a comment posted on his official YouTube page (warning: link contains NSFW language).
“Huge congrats to Russell Westbrook on MVP, that boy went out there and was a created player on 2k all year, F–kin balled out,” he wrote. “Gotta respect it!”
Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated noted in January that Durant and Westbrook had not really talked since Durant signed with the Warriors last summer.
The two had a verbal exchange during a Feb. 11 game between the Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder in Durant’s return to Oklahoma City.
Westbrook and Durant were teammates for eight seasons with the Thunder from 2008-16. The franchise made six playoff appearances with that duo leading the charge and reached the NBA Finals in 2012.
Westbrook joined Durant as the only players in Thunder/Seattle SuperSonics history to be named NBA MVP. The Thunder star beat out James Harden and Kawhi Leonard for the honor, getting 69 out of a possible 101 first-place votes.
