Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard Headline 2016-17 NBA All-Defensive Teams

The 2016-17 NBA All-Defensive Teams were announced Monday, and Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard and Rudy Gobert earned near-unanimous support.

Patrick Beverley and Chris Paul secured the two guard spots on the first team over Tony Allen and Danny Green.

Chris Haynes of ESPN provided a full breakdown of the voting:

Green, Leonard and Gobert are the three finalists for the Defensive Player of the Year award, which will be announced Monday night.

Leonard posted his best offensive numbers this season with a career-high 25.5 points per game, putting him in the MVP discussion, but his defense hasn’t wavered. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year remains one of the best on-ball defenders in the league.

Meanwhile, this is the third straight appearance on the All-Defensive first team for Green, who helped the Warriors win their second title in three seasons.

Paul earned his seventh first-team selection, putting him in rare territory, per Shane Young of FanRag Sports:

Gobert is new to this list, but he easily led the NBA this season with 6.0 defensive win shares, per Basketball Reference.

There were a few notable snubs who could have earned a spot on either team, like Avery Bradley and Klay Thompson, although some of the biggest question marks came from those at the end of the list. For instance, somebody cast a vote for Boston Celtics star Isaiah Thomas, which is sure to raise eyebrows.

Still, the best in the league earned well-deserved recognition for their work on the defensive end of the court.
