Bucks’ Spencer Hawes Reportedly Opts-In on Contract Option for $6 Million

Milwaukee Bucks power forward Spencer Hawes exercised the player option on his contract and will remain with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2017-18 season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

Hawes, 29, will make $6 million next year, according to Spotrac.

The veteran power forward averaged 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds last season in stints with the Charlotte Hornets and the Bucks. After being traded to Milwaukee in February, however, he averaged just 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 9.0 minutes per game as the Bucks relied more heavily on Greg Monroe, Thon Maker and Michael Beasley in the frontcourt or played small.

And with Jabari Parker sliding back into the power forward spot once he recovers from a torn ACL, and John Henson and Mirza Teletovic available as well, Hawes likely won’t see his role increase next year.

Nonetheless, he perhaps didn’t feel he could get a better deal for next season on the open market and was willing to take on a bench role for a playoff contender like the Bucks. Hawes won’t see a lot of minutes barring injuries—in large part due to his inability to be an effective defender—but he’s a nice depth option for the Bucks given his ability to make an impact on the offensive end of the floor.
