Shams Charania of The Vertical reported the Kings intend to release Afflalo, adding he has a contract guarantee that would kick in on Friday.
Afflalo signed a two-year, $25 million deal with the Kings last offseason. He was due to make $12.5 million in base salary next season, with $1.5 million guaranteed if he remained on the roster after June 23, per Spotrac.
The 31-year-old Afflalo did appear in 61 games for the Kings last season and shot 41.1 percent from three-point range.
After selecting De’Aaron Fox, Justin Jackson, Harry Giles and Frank Mason in Thursday’s draft, the Kings will build around their young talent. That makes an aging veteran like Afflalo expendable, while also allowing him to find a better fit when free agency begins in July.
